How to Identify if Purchased Pig Drinking Equipment is Stainless Steel?

Introduction

Pig drinking equipment is essential for both large-scale and small-to-medium-sized pig farms. It's a core component for ensuring healthy drinking water for pigs and reducing farming costs. Common automatic pig drinkers mainly consist of a drinking body, valve stem, steel ball, and filter screen. Their working principle is simple and convenient: when a pig drinks, it pushes the valve stem with its mouth, lifting the internal steel ball, allowing water to flow out through the gap; after releasing its mouth, the steel ball falls back and closes, automatically stopping the water flow.

This automatic drinking structure not only significantly saves water and reduces waste, but also eliminates the hassle of frequent manual watering, lowering labor costs. Currently, the materials used in pig drinking equipment on the market vary greatly. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, rust-resistant, has a long service life, and is less prone to bacterial growth, making it suitable for the humid environment of pig farms and the preferred material for farmers.

However, many inferior waterers on the market are made of ordinary iron or scrap steel, masquerading as stainless steel. These inferior products rust, leak, and clog after only a short period of use, not only affecting the pigs' drinking water but also easily causing water pollution. Many farmers don't know how to distinguish them and end up buying substandard products. Today, we'll share two simple and easy-to-use methods that farmers can do at home to quickly determine whether pig drinking equipment is made of genuine stainless steel.

Practical methods for identifying stainless steel in pig drinking equipment.

Method 1: Saltwater Immersion Test (Identifying Rust Quality)

Saltwater simulates the humid and corrosive environment of a pig farm, providing the simplest and most intuitive material testing method. Even novice farmers can easily operate it.

Procedure: Immerse the pig drinker to be tested completely in the prepared saltwater solution for 24 hours. Remove it the next day and observe the surface condition.

Results:
- Inferior iron/mixed steel drinkers: After immersion, large areas of rust will appear on the surface. The rust is highly adhesive and difficult to remove even with vigorous wiping. Long-term use will continue to cause rust and corrosion.
- Genuine stainless steel drinkers: Rust is rarely seen. If a small amount of surface rust appears, it is normal and can be easily removed with a cloth or paper towel without corroding the device itself.
Method 2: Magnetic Adsorption Test (Quickly Identify Material Purity)

The magnetic test is a simple and commonly used method in the industry, primarily used to distinguish pure stainless steel from inferior steel containing iron impurities or ordinary iron.

Identification Principle and Results:
High-quality pure stainless steel itself does not possess magnetic properties. When a magnet is placed close to the surface of the waterer, no magnetic force will be generated. If the purchased pig waterer can be firmly attracted by a magnet, it indicates that the device is most likely made of ordinary iron or inferior stainless steel mixed with a large number of impurities. This type of material has extremely poor waterproof and corrosion-resistant capabilities and is unsuitable for use in the long-term humid environment of pig farms.

Tips for Choosing Stainless Steel Pig Waterers:

1. Check the appearance and texture: Genuine stainless steel waterers have a smooth, delicate surface with a uniform gloss, free of burrs and rough scratches; inferior steel has a dull surface, rough workmanship, and edges that are easy to scratch.

2. Check the welding process: High-quality equipment has smooth and firm welds that are not prone to cracking and leaks; inferior products have rough welds and are prone to leakage after a period of use.

3. Suitable for the farming environment: Pig farms are advised to choose 304 food-grade stainless steel, which is acid and alkali resistant, corrosion resistant, suitable for cold water and room temperature farming water, and has a service life of several years, offering a higher overall cost-performance ratio.

Conclusion

Stainless steel pig drinking water equipment has become standard equipment in pig farms due to its durability, hygiene, and water conservation. When purchasing, farmers don't need professional testing equipment; they can quickly identify genuine materials using a salt water immersion test and a magnetic adsorption test.

Rejecting inferior, rusty drinking waterers and choosing genuine stainless steel equipment ensures the quality of drinking water for pigs, reduces equipment replacement costs, and improves farming efficiency.
